Frequently Asked Questions about School-Based Health Centers

Q. Who can be seen in the school-based health centers?
A. Children must be enrolled in an eligible Denver Public School. We are able to see pre-school through grade 12 students. Students enrolled in over 50 Denver Public Schools may access a SBHC.

Q. How are parents involved?
A. Parents and guardians are asked to sign a consent form before a student can go to the school-based health center. Once this consent is signed, the student may access the health center at any time during the school year.

Students in grades 6-12 are able to go to the clinic alone, but children in pre-school through fifth grade, must have a parent or guardian present with them.

Q. How will I know what is going on with my child’s health?
A. We strongly support communication between parents, children and our clinic staff, and this is a principle goal of each of our health centers. We encourage students to discuss their health care with their parents. However, parents are not routinely notified when a student uses the health center, except by student request or when there is a serious health condition identified.

Students in grades 6-12 are able to go to the clinic alone, but children in pre-school through fifth grade, must have a parent present with them.

Q. What about confidentiality?
A. Student visits to the health center are confidential. Information is not shared without student and./or parental permission. The only exception is a life-threatening situation.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. There is NO charge to the student or their family for medical services. Students will not have to pay co-pays, deductibles or fees to be seen. Insurance may be billed, but without cost to families.

Q. Why do you ask for insurance information?
A. Families are asked to provide health insurance information, so that we can bill for the services we provide whenever possible. Plus, if your child does not have health insurance, our staff has information about a number of programs that you may qualify for—which allows your child to be healthy year-round.

Visits are free, but we want to make sure that we connect you with other resources you and your child may need.

Q. How do I make an appointment?

A. Just call the School-Based Health Center location directly. Our staff will answer your call and will schedule an appointment that works with your schedule and with your student’s class schedule.
